Small Business Web Site Hosting -
How To Select The Right Solution

Find Out How You Can Get Tons Of
Amazing Internet Marketing Products – For FREE!

Ok, let's take a look at the different solutions on the market. You don't really have to understand all the technical details, but you should be aware of the minimum requirements for small business web site hosting.

What are the different solutions for small business web site hosting?

There are two different operating systems:  Linux and Microsoft Windows.  The monthly hosting fees for Linux are usually lower and many of the hosting services are offering only Linux.

Unless you want to do your own programming in ASP or .NET, I recommend Linux. Even if you know how to program, I suggest you concentrate 100% on  building your business. At the most you might have to tweak some HTML every now and then.

Further, you can choose between a shared server (hosts the websites of several people) and a dedicated server (hosts only your website). Dedicated servers are much more expensive, they start at ~ $50 - $70 per month. For a small business web site hosting, a shared server is absolutely sufficient at the beginning.

The prices for shared server hosting service vary between $4 and $80 per month. It's not necessary to take the most expensive solution, but you also should not take the cheapest one, as this will most probably hurt your business sooner or later.

Stay away from free hosting services. They might be ok for a “My little Hobby” site, but not for a business web site.

Problems with free and low coast hosting services

The pages of your site load slowly - you will loose some clients

Low reliability of the web server - your site won't be accessible
      at certain times.

You might have to agree to display ads on your site - this will hurt
your credibility as a serious business person

Bad service or no service at all...

Bottom Line: It’s not worth to undermine the success of your business by trying to save a few bucks on free hosting solutions.

Checklist for small business web site hosting

Reliability: Make sure that your web host is reliable and
offers ~ 99.5% guaranteed server uptime.

Fast Connection Speed: Get the names of 5 sites that are already on
your potential web host and visit them to see how quickly they are
loading. Also try to test them at different times of the day.

No Advertising: Make sure to choose an advertising-free web host,
otherwise your credibility as a serious business will suffer. Again, stay
      away from free web hosting!

Server Space: The amount of space your entire website takes up on
the server – you should have at least 500 MB.

Bandwidth: That is the amount of your allowed data transfer. Lets say,
your homepage is 500 kilobytes (=0.5 MB) in size (a fairly big page)
and your hosting service allows you a data transfer of 10 GB / month
      (=10000 MB).

That means that 10000 MB/ 0.5 MB = 20000 visitors can come to your
home page per month. Ok, enough now with the math.

I suggest you look for a minimum of 50 GB of data transfer /month.

Email Accounts: Ask for at least 5 POP Email Accounts.

Web Statistics Program: Your hosting service should provide you
with a free web statistics program.

Technical Support: Ask for a good 24/7 (not only during weekdays)
support by telephone and email. They also have to have competent
staff to answer tricky technical questions.

My site is hosted with BlueHost.com and I’m very happy with their service. They offer more bandwidth, more disk-space, a bigger selection of tools… than most other companies for the same price. You get great service – whenever I had a special request, it was handled almost immediately.

Best of all, you can host up to 6 web sites under one account. That means, you can operate 6 sites for the price of one – as far as I know, you can’t do this with any other hosting company.

I compared many different hosting companies, but I couldn’t find a better offer.

Before you select a small business web site hosting service, do your due diligence and spend some time to research different options.

Do not put your business at risk by choosing a free or almost free hosting service - this might be tempting, but your chances to succeed will be almost zero.
