An incoming link is a link from another site to your
website. You can start building incoming links by listing your site in directories or by asking other webmasters to include a link to your website on their site.
Both, on-page and off-page criteria determine the ranking of your websites pages in the search engines. Examples for on-page criteria are the keywords you are using in the title, body and meta tags of your page.
Search engines use this information to evaluate the topic of your page.
Off-page criteria don’t provide any information about how much human visitors appreciate your website and that’s where off-page criteria come into play.
There are many different off-page criteria and inbound links are one of the most important ones.
If your website gets incoming links from major directories and some of the most important sites in your industry, the search engines will consider your site to be more important and to have more credibility as a similar site without any incoming links. This will also improve the ranking of your pages in the search engines results pages.
It’s a good idea to start building incoming links some already at an early stage, when your website has about 20 – 30 content pages. This will enable your site to get spidered by the search engines and to stay in their indexes without getting dropped periodically.
Before you start building incoming links, make sure that your site is ready. There must not be any “under-construction” pages, no broken links and
you should have already developed some valuable content. Otherwise, directory editors and the webmasters you are asking for a link most probably will reject your site.
What are the big advantages of incoming
links?
● Your website will get spidered by the search engines which will start
generating traffic to your newly launched site. This is especially important
for those search engines that don’t accept submissions. Teoma is an
example of an important search engine that doesn’t allow you to submit
to it manually.
● Your website will stay in the search engines index. If your site doesn’t
have any inbound links or only a few low quality links, it is likely that your
site will be dropped periodically from the search engines databases.
● Quality inbound links will improve the ranking of your site in the search
engines results pages. For example, if some of your pages are ranking
at the positions 11-15, it is likely that some quality inbound links will
push your pages into a top ten ranking position.
●
Building incoming links is relatively easy and it doesn’t take
much time.
When you develop your linking strategy, make sure to get
some incoming links from well-established sites with good credentials. The search engines will give your site far better credentials if it has only a few high quality links rather than having 100 incoming links from sites that are irrelevant and of low quality.
How do you get high quality incoming links?
● From the major directories like Yahoo, DMOZ (Open Directory) and Zeal.
Yahoo charges $ 299 for a review of your site, which doesn’t guarantee
an inclusion in the directory. In my opinion, getting listed in the Yahoo
directory isn’t really necessary for a small niche business.
Submission to DMOZ and Zeal is free, so I definitely recommend you
submit your site. The drawback with the last two directories is that it
might take a few months until your site gets included and Zeal accepts
only non-commercial sites.
It is relatively easy to get your site included in these directories and
you get a guaranteed review within 48 hours for a one-time fee of
about $30. I think it is a good investment for a small business to get
listed in 2-3 of these second tier directories.
● From niche directories. It is definitively worth spending a few hours to
find some suitable niche directories for your linking program. Inclusion
should be free and easy for most of these directories.
● By directly contacting webmasters of other sites. Again, choose only
quality sites with themes that are related to your business. The ideal
sites are those ones with excellent content, a high Google PR and a
good Alexa score.
Building incoming links to your website is easy, cheap and it doesn’t take much time. Considering all the advantages, I highly recommend you spend a few hours and maybe even a few dollars to get some quality inbound links to your site.
