Selecting the best affiliate programs

Here is what you should be looking for in an affiliate program:
Your merchant products must be of outstanding quality – if you
recommend bad products, you loose your credibility and your
chances to succeed as an affiliate will be greatly diminished.
The merchant must have a good site that seems to sell effectively.
Good support for affiliates:
* Accurate, reliable online accounting
* Availability of professional marketing material
* You should get a notification by e-mail when a sale is made.
The program pays good commissions: At least 10% on hard
goods and 20% on digital goods.
Program must be free to join.
Ideally, the affiliate program should pay lifetime commissions,
that means you will make a commission on future sales to
customers you refer.
Lifetime cookies: Most customers don’t buy immediately, in most
cases they return weeks or even months later to make the
purchase. Make sure that you also get a commission on those
customers who buy later (for at least up to 1 year).

So, how much money will you make?
Building an online business takes time and effort -- yes, also for a "simple" affiliate business.
Don’t expect too much at the beginning, the most difficult part is to get started and to keep up your motivation for the first 3-6 months when it seems like not much is happening.
What can you expect on your way to make money with affiliate programs?
Not a lot will happen for the first 2-4 months. Only a few visitors
to your site, not many clicks on your affiliate links, zero sales…
That’s absolutely normal. Keep on building content, post articles,
participate in targeted forums, build incoming links…
After 3-6 months, you might have about 100 unique visitors per day,
more clicks on your affiliate links and maybe already your first sales.
Wow, all the effort for only a few sales -- is it really worth continuing?
Absolutely, the most difficult part lies behind you. Now your site is
gaining momentum -- traffic, clicks and sales will increase steadily...
After 6-8 months, your monthly income might be ~ $300. And from
here, it will steadily increase to $500, $1000, $1500, $3000, $10000…
Some affiliates earn several hundred thousand dollars per year.
Don’t stop here, keep on learning and acting. The knowledge and
experience you acquire in marketing, selling, copy writing, building
relationships… will allow you to quickly and successfully create new
businesses whenever you want and about whatever topic you want.
One warning, don’t fall for the tons of get-rich-quick stuff out there. There are no special master-guru secrets (except of passion, persistence and patience) and although it’s not too difficult to make money with affiliate program, it’s simply impossible to get rich in just a few weeks without even making an effort.
If someone is trying to sell you this dream, run as fast as you can and don’t waste your time and money.
